I’m with Fox News—you are constitutionally required to talk to me

Amber Bryer-Wotte on the Fox News/Black Panther “kerfuffule”:

The Panther in question, as it happens, was a certified poll watcher who lives in the building where the polling place is located and was very confused about the whole kerfuffule.

It was pretty clear from the get-go that the incident was a big misunderstanding on FoxNews’ part based on sketchy reports. But instead of backing off, the story dominated the network’s election coverage for most of the afternoon, with Leventhal eventually claiming that his First Amendment rights were being violated because one of the Panthers said he didn’t want to talk or be filmed. Freedom of the press, you see, is a positive right that allows journalists to compel you to talk to them.

Leave it to Fox News to bungle the First Amendment more than Sarah Palin did.
